Sri Lanka Nov 17th to 21st
In November the team of doctors of Smile Bangladesh are going to do a medical mission to Sri Lanka for Cleft Lip Repair. I plan to be on that mission to document their work and I invite you to join me. Part of the time we’ll be part of the medical mission, part of the time we’ll be exploring. If you have ever had the desire to get behind the scenes of a medical mission this is the trip. It has been my way of giving back. The team of SmileBangladesh.org will be on its 20th mission to help the neediest of children. The doctors plan to repair clefts and help correct the damage of burns from the war.
We will be invited into the OR, the recovery rooms, local homes, schools and businesses. We will take day trips to explore the many temples and beaches of the area.
After spending time with the doctors, we will travel back to Colombo by van to explore the northern end of the island on our way back to our departure. The plan is to take 3 or 4 days in order for us to take our time to do many side trips off the main road.
Documenting medical missions has changed the way I see and has elevated my photography.
Price $4500 Deposit of $800
- Group of 4 photographers plus 1 director Bruce Byers
- $500 of each trip fee will be donated to Smilebangladesh.org and is a tax write-off.
November 10th: Fly to Colombo, Sri Lanka
- We will all meet in Colombo, Sri Lanka
November 11th: Colombo
- Arrive and transfer to the hotel
November 12th: Fly to Jaffna
- We will fly to Jaffna with the medical team
- Jaffna is on the northern end of the island. The team of doctors will be operating for 5 days on children with clefts and burns.
November 13th: Mission starts Jaffna
- We are invited into the OR
- Day of screening and prep
- The clinic will be our stage for the next 4 days
- We will explore the area, photographing in homes, on the streets, temple etc
- Day trips will be a must
- Hospital, local area
November 14th: Mission Jaffna
- We will work in the clinic and also do side trips
November 15th: Mission Jaffna
- We will work in the clinic and also do side trips
November 16th: Mission Jaffna
- We will work in the clinic and also do side trips
November 17th: Travel to Colombo
- On the road back to Colombo
- Stay in small towns
- Explore the area with side trips
November 18th: Travel to Colombo
- On the road back to Colombo
- Stay in small towns
- Explore the area with side trips
November 19th: Travel to Colombo
- On the road back to Colombo
- Stay in small towns
- Explore the area with side trips
November 20th: Day in Colombo
- Spend the day in and around Colombo
- Once back in Colombo we will tour the city
November 21st: Fly Home
On many of my trips like this I often head off to a near by location to continue photographing. In this case going into India on the way home could be an option.
